Ascension is a non-profit Catholic healthcare system and institutional investor based in St. Louis, Missouri, that operates hospitals, outpatient facilities, and senior living communities across the United States. The organization manages a vast clinical network comprising approximately 140 hospitals across 19 states, supported by a workforce of more than 134,000 employees. Generating over $27 billion in annual operating revenue, the entity also functions as a major asset manager through Ascension Investment Management, which oversees more than $40 billion in assets under management. Through its strategic venture capital arm, Ascension Ventures, the organization has backed notable healthcare technology portfolio companies including Phreesia, Cedar, and Olive, while partnering with Henry Ford Health. Ascension was founded in 1999 through the merger of the Daughters of Charity National Health System and the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System.
