The firm was founded in 2020 by Kevin Johnson, who serves as Founder and Managing Partner, and Julian Love, a Venture Partner. Their foundational insight stemmed from the significant disparity in venture capital allocation, with less than two percent historically directed towards Black founders. Johnson, a former two-term Mayor of Sacramento and NBA All-Star, alongside Love, a finance professional and former CFO of St. HOPE, established Black Capital to address this gap.
