Design to Improve Life Fund

The Design to Improve Life Fund, an investment arm of The Index Project, is a Danish non-profit organization promoting design solutions to enhance global quality of life. The organization identifies, celebrates, and strategically supports design-led innovations through its internationally recognized Index Award, educational programs, and direct investments. It employs a comprehensive framework to select impactful designs that address pressing societal and environmental challenges.

Established in 2002, The Index Project originated from an idea by designer Johan Adam Linneballe and Jørgen Rosted, then Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs. Initially focused on elevating Denmark’s global standing, the initiative quickly embraced a wider mission, adopting its motto, "Design to Improve Life," to guide its worldwide endeavors. Kigge Hvid served as the founding chief executive.

The Fund and its parent organization primarily serve designers and innovators whose work benefits communities across both developed and developing nations. Its long-term vision is to champion and scale design as a fundamental tool for positive societal impact, aiming to foster continuous improvement in human well-being and sustainable living on a global scale.
