University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) is a prominent research and educational institution focused on understanding and managing global natural resources. It conducts scientific investigations across a network of specialized laboratories, employing diverse technical approaches in fields such as ecosystem health, climate change, fisheries, toxicology, and marine biotechnology. The organization's roots trace back to 1925 with the establishment of a research station on Solomons Island by Dr. Reginald V. Truitt, which later evolved into the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. This facility then affiliated with the Natural Resources Institute of the University of Maryland in 1961, undergoing a significant reorganization in 1973 as the Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies. It was formally renamed the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science in 1997.

UMCES primarily serves state and national leaders, policymakers, and communities by providing evidence-based advice for environmental management. It also educates the next generation of environmental scientists through comprehensive graduate programs.
