Unitary Foundation operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating a robust quantum technology ecosystem. It achieves this by providing microgrants to innovative quantum projects, conducting internal research to develop open-source tools such as Mitiq for error mitigation and Metriq for benchmarking, and fostering a vibrant community through hackathons and educational events. This comprehensive approach supports the advancement and accessibility of quantum technologies across various applications.

The organization was founded by Will Zeng in June 2018, initially launching as Unitary Fund with a foundational blog post and a microgrant program. Zeng’s insight recognized the nascent stage of the quantum industry and the critical need for agile financial support to empower early explorers and projects within this emerging field. This initiative sought to catalyze development and collaboration from its inception.

Unitary Foundation primarily serves a global community of quantum researchers, developers, and enthusiasts, along with academic and independent project teams seeking support.
