IMRF

IMRF, based in Oak Brook, Illinois, administers retirement, disability, and death benefits for employees of local government agencies and school districts across Illinois, excluding Chicago and Cook County. The organization manages a defined-benefit pension plan that has served public employees since 1941, providing income protection through employer-based contributions from its 3,062 participating local units of government. As of December 31, 2024, IMRF oversees $55.2 billion in assets for nearly 525,000 members and retirees. With approximately 220 staff members, the fund maintains a 96.6% funded status, positioning it among the best-funded public pension systems nationally. Executive Director Brian Collins leads the organization, which in 2019 became the first public pension fund to receive a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. IMRF was created by the Illinois General Assembly in 1939 and began operations in 1941.
