The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection is a government agency based in Berlin and Bonn, Germany, that manages the country's economic and climate protection policies. The ministry shapes legislation across energy, industry, innovation, small business policy, and competition to promote sustainable development while maintaining national competitiveness and high employment levels. Operating with an annual budget of €10.434 billion as of 2021, the organization employs a workforce of 2,187 individuals. It oversees several major regulatory and scientific agencies, including the Federal Cartel Office, the Federal Network Agency, the German National Metrology Institute, the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control, and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing. The institution was originally established in 1917 as the Reich Economic Office and was later reconstituted as the Federal Ministry of Economics in 1949.
