Capital B operates as a non-profit news organization, delivering local and national journalism specifically tailored for Black communities across the United States. It produces in-depth reporting on critical issues such as politics, health, criminal justice, and environmental concerns, while also establishing local newsrooms that provide civic journalism and accountability reporting rooted in intensive community engagement and listening. The organization aims to counteract low-quality information by offering clear, accessible, and high-context news content.

The company was co-founded by Lauren Williams, who serves as CEO, and Akoto Ofori-Atta, the Chief Audience Officer. Williams previously held the position of senior vice president and editor-in-chief at Vox, bringing extensive experience in editorial and business operations. Ofori-Atta, a former managing editor at The Trace and senior editor at Essence, contributed her expertise in editorial leadership and audience engagement. Their shared insight was the urgent need for a dedicated news platform providing relevant, trustworthy journalism for Black audiences.
