Torkel Ödegaard

Torkel Ödegaard is the creator of the open-source observability platform Grafana and currently serves as Co-founder at Grafana Labs. He initially developed the software as a personal project in 2013 while working with the monitoring tool Graphite during his engineering tenure at Orbitz. Following its public release in January 2014, the data visualization platform experienced rapid commercial adoption and now supports a global user base exceeding 20 million active individuals worldwide. To commercialize the project, he co-founded the entity originally known as Raintank, which later became Grafana Labs. The company has secured more than $500 million in total funding from investors including Sequoia Capital, recently raising a $270 million round in 2024 at a $6 billion valuation. His current focus centers on advancing open-source observability infrastructure and integrating artificial intelligence to streamline complex enterprise data analysis.
