Richard Ulevitch

Richard Ulevitch is a Venture Partner Emeritus at 5AM Ventures based in California. Prior to his venture capital career, he spent over five decades at The Scripps Research Institute, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Immunology from 1994 until 2008 and recently retired as Professor Emeritus in 2025. During his academic tenure, he made foundational discoveries in innate immunity, including the identification of the LPS binding protein and the p38 MAP kinase. At 5AM Ventures, a firm managing $685 million across more than 40 early-stage life science investments, he helped launch multiple biotechnology startups and oversaw portfolio exits to major pharmaceutical corporations like Takeda and Amgen. His career bridges academic immunology research and life sciences entrepreneurship, focusing on the commercialization of novel therapeutics, spinouts from established companies, and advanced platform technologies.
