Phil Black is a veteran early-stage venture capitalist and cofounder of True Ventures, based in San Francisco, California. Since establishing the firm in 2005 alongside Jon Callaghan, whom he initially met while working at Summit Partners, he has helped direct over three billion dollars in capital across more than 350 startup teams. Before launching True Ventures, he founded the seed fund Blacksmith Capital and served as a General Partner at both ABS Ventures and Weiss, Peck and Greer Venture Partners. His extensive corporate governance experience includes holding board director positions at prominent technology companies such as Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, as well as Kurtosys, Copper, HelpShift, and StrongDM. A Stanford University alumnus originally from Oklahoma, Black maintains a primary investment focus on early-stage seed funding, entrepreneurial mentorship, and strategic partnerships within the technology sector.
