Matthew Hartman is the Managing Partner at Factorial Capital, an early-stage venture firm he founded in 2022 to back technical founders building artificial intelligence startups. Before launching Factorial, he spent nearly a decade at Betaworks as a Partner and Director of Seed Investments, writing the first check into Hugging Face, which later reached a $4.5 billion valuation. His successful venture career also includes early investments in Anchor, which was acquired by Spotify, and Software Inc, which was acquired by OpenAI. Prior to investing, Hartman worked as a software developer at CBRE, co-founded Hot Potato before its acquisition by Facebook, and founded ReferBoost, which was licensed to Apartments.com. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and dual master's degrees from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, leveraging his engineering background for deep technical diligence.
