John Obirije

John Obirije is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Afriex, a financial technology startup focused on cross-border payments and global remittances. Since co-founding the company in 2019 alongside Tope Alabi, he has led the development of a blockchain-based remittance platform that processes millions of dollars in monthly transaction volume across more than 25 countries. Obirije built the technical infrastructure that helped the Y Combinator-backed enterprise secure over $11 million in total venture capital funding. Under his technical leadership, Afriex closed a $1.2 million seed round in May 2021, followed by a $10 million Series A financing in April 2022 at a $60 million valuation, drawing investments from Sequoia Capital China and Dragonfly Capital. His current focus remains on scaling blockchain integration and engineering operations to facilitate low-cost international transfers within the African technology ecosystem.
