David Mills

David A. Mills is a Professor in the Department of Food Science and Technology at UC Davis and a serial biotechnology entrepreneur based in Davis, California. He holds the Peter J. Shields Endowed Chair at the university and has successfully co-founded three distinct biotechnology startup companies: Evolve Biosystems, BCD Bioscience, and Matrubials. His academic laboratory research primarily investigates the molecular biology and ecology of gut health bacteria alongside specific microbes utilized in fermented foods. Recognized for his extensive scientific contributions to microbiome research, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology in 2015 and has been named a highly cited researcher annually since 2018. Mills currently focuses on translating his academic discoveries regarding microbial health solutions into viable commercial applications within the broader biotechnology and food science sectors.
