Key people at The New York Blood Center.
The New York Blood Center (NYBC) is a nonprofit leader in transfusion medicine and healthcare solutions, primarily collecting, processing, and distributing blood products. It conducts biomedical research, innovating in rare blood registries, advanced barcoding systems for blood banking, and developing cord blood stem cell therapies. NYBC’s operations span multiple states.
NYBC's origins trace to Inter-County Blood Banks in the early 1950s, formally establishing as a nonprofit in 1964. This directly addressed New York City’s critical, unsafe blood supply shortage and lack of centralized oversight. Dr. Aaron Kellner led the initial Community Blood Council of Greater New York, which officially rebranded as the New York Blood Center in 1977.
NYBC supports a broad network of patients and medical institutions by providing essential blood products. Its mission ensures a safe, reliable blood supply for communities, advancing global health through scientific discovery and innovation in blood processing. The organization remains committed to pioneering future healthcare solutions.
