The Austin Group

The Austin Group, officially known as The Austin Common Standards Revision Group, develops and maintains foundational open system interfaces. Its primary product is the Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) 1003.1 standard, along with ISO/IEC 9945 and the core of the Single UNIX Specification. This approach ensures a unified set of specifications, branded by IEEE POSIX, The Open Group's Technical Standard, and ISO/IEC, promoting a "write once, adopt everywhere" methodology for software and operating systems.

This critical working group emerged from a collaborative insight that recognized the need for harmonized industry-led and formal standardization activities. Established through joint efforts by organizations like IEEE and The Open Group, the latter of which manages its day-to-day operations including chairing and editorial oversight, the group facilitates a continuous revision process for these essential standards.
