# Sinclair Knight Merz: High-Level Overview
Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) was a professional services and engineering consulting firm that operated globally before being acquired by Jacobs Engineering Group in 2013.[1][2] The company provided integrated infrastructure, consulting, planning, engineering, architecture, scientific, and construction management services across multiple sectors and geographies.
SKM was wholly employee-owned and positioned itself as a leader in sustainable project delivery and international development assistance.[3] The firm operated across three major regions—Asia Pacific, the Americas, and EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa)—with approximately 6,500 employees across more than 40 offices.[3] Its primary service sectors included Buildings and Infrastructure, Mining and Metals, Power and Energy, and Water and Environment.[2][3]
# Origin Story
SKM's lineage traces back to two separate founding entities that merged in 1996.[1] Sinclair Knight commenced as a partnership in 1963, incorporated in 1972, and underwent multiple mergers with Australian and international companies.[1] Merz Australia originated as a branch of the United Kingdom firm Merz and McLelland in 1954, later incorporating as an independent entity in 1988.[1] The formal merger of these two firms in 1996 created Sinclair Knight Merz as a consolidated consulting engineering powerhouse.[1]
The company expanded its capabilities over the following decades, acquiring assets from the Rural Water Corporation's HydroTechnology Division in 1995 and building significant expertise in geothermal exploration services globally.[1][2] By 2013, SKM had grown to a 6,900-person organization with approximately AUS$1.3 billion in annual revenue.[2]

# Acquisition and Current Status
In December 2013, California-based Jacobs Engineering Group completed its acquisition of SKM for approximately AUS$1.3 billion (US$1.2 billion).[2] The merger was announced in September 2013 and finalized by year-end, with all SKM operations subsequently conducted under the Jacobs Engineering brand.[2] The Sinclair Knight Merz name was retired, with employees transitioning their professional identities to Jacobs Engineering.[2]
This acquisition represented a strategic expansion for Jacobs, diversifying its geographic footprint and end-market capabilities while integrating SKM's 6,900-person workforce and established client relationships into the larger Jacobs organization.[2]
