Runway Incubator is a mentor-driven startup incubation program launched by the UPES Council for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (UCIE) under the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) in India. Its mission is to support early-stage innovators by providing mentorship, grants up to ₹1 lakh, investments, legal support, workspace, and an intensive 8-10 week blended program to refine ideas, build prototypes, and prepare for investors, aligning with India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative to foster indigenous entrepreneurship.[1][2][3] Sector-agnostic and open to startups across India, it has incubated over 250 ventures in areas like ed-tech, healthcare, biotech, fintech, AI/ML, fashion, and sustainability, significantly impacting the ecosystem by helping them scale and attract funding.[3]
Established in 2021 by the UPES School of Business as part of UCIE—backed by UPES and the Hydrocarbons Education & Research Society (HERS)—Runway was recognized by the Government of Uttarakhand as a state nodal agency for entrepreneurship.[1][3] It emerged from UPES's pre-existing focus on innovation, where alumni had already built successful businesses, aiming to catalyze a thriving startup ecosystem amid national calls for youth-led, "vocal for local" solutions.[2][3] Key figures include a team of entrepreneurs, investors, mentors, and subject matter experts; the program quickly gained traction, supporting startups from idea to market-ready products through selective cohorts of 20-30 ventures annually.[1][2]
Runway rides India's booming startup wave, fueled by government pushes like Atmanirbhar Bharat for self-reliance in innovation, infrastructure, and investment, amid a surge in sectors like AI/ML, fintech, and sustainability.[2][3] Its timing leverages Uttarakhand's recognition as a nodal incubator, addressing early-stage funding gaps in a market where startups drive economic growth and social impact, as seen in its diverse portfolio transforming ideas into viable businesses.[1][3] By empowering university-linked and external founders, it strengthens the national ecosystem, producing investor-ready ventures and alumni successes that inspire broader entrepreneurship.[3]
Runway is poised to expand its cohorts, potentially onboarding 30+ startups yearly while deepening ties to global VCs and aligning with emerging trends like AI-driven sustainability and deep tech.[3][5] Rising demand for pre-seed support in underrepresented sectors will shape its growth, amplifying influence through more demo days and grants amid India's startup boom. As it scales from 250+ incubations, Runway will solidify as a launchpad for "vocal for local" innovators, turning early ideas into ecosystem-defining successes.[1][2][3]
