The institution's roots extend to 1869 with the founding of Clarkson Hospital and later University Hospital in 1917. These entities merged in 1997 to form the Nebraska Health System, which was later rebranded as The Nebraska Medical Center. The insight to fully integrate clinical care, education, and research led to the formal clinical integration in 2014, uniting The Nebraska Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center, and UNMC Physicians under the Nebraska Medicine brand, officially establishing as a nonprofit corporation in 2016.
