Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) is a privately funded research and teaching institution focused on IT-Systems Engineering and software systems engineering, based in Potsdam, Germany, with a presence in Palo Alto, California. The institute is entirely funded by the Hasso Plattner Foundation, with Hasso Plattner committing over €200 million in total funding. HPI began operations with 77 students in winter 1999, growing its graduate-level education and research programs. Its research in areas like in-memory data management led to the development of HANA database technology, and Hasso Plattner, co-founder of SAP SE, served as a professor and department head until spring 2023. HPI also operates the HPI School of Design Thinking, teaching methodology across disciplines. Hasso Plattner Institute was founded in October 1998 by Hasso Plattner.
