Medical device startup developing minimally invasive beating-heart mitral valve repair devices for degenerative mitral regurgitation.
Harpoon Medical, based in Baltimore, Maryland, developed a minimally invasive device for beating-heart repair of the mitral valve to treat degenerative mitral regurgitation. Invented by James S. Gammie, its technology enabled surgeons to access the valve through a small incision, reducing procedure times from 3-6 hours to under 60 minutes. The venture-funded medical device startup attracted investments from Epidarex Capital, Maryland Venture Fund, and the Abell Foundation. In 2015, Harpoon Medical signed a deal with Edwards Lifesciences, which included an upfront investment and an acquisition option, leading to its acquisition for $100 million cash on December 1, 2017, with potential additional milestone payments of up to $150 million, totaling a potential $250 million. Founded in 2013 by James S. Gammie, with Peter Mckeage Wilson as co-founder and Bill Niland as President & CEO.
