Gotham Partners Management Company was a New York City-based hedge fund that invested in public and private equity, initially focusing on undervalued stocks before shifting to controlling stakes in private companies with largely illiquid assets. The firm managed portfolios for investors seeking high returns through value-oriented strategies, growing rapidly in the 1990s. It commenced operations with $3 million in assets under management (AUM) in 1992, rapidly expanding to $300 million and reaching $568 million by 2000. Notable investors included Seth Klarman, Michael Steinhardt, and Whitney Tilson, who entrusted the firm with capital. The fund's portfolio notably included a majority stake in Gotham Golf, a golf course operator, which contributed to investor redemptions and the fund's eventual closure around 2002. Gotham Partners was founded in 1992 by Bill Ackman and David Berkowitz.
