Freeline is a London-based clinical-stage biotechnology company developing adeno-associated virus vector gene therapies targeted to the liver for chronic genetic diseases. The organization focuses on creating one-time treatments for conditions with significant unmet medical needs, advancing clinical programs for Gaucher disease type 1, hemophilia, Fabry disease, and GBA1-linked Parkinson’s disease. Before its acquisition and subsequent corporate rebranding to Spur Therapeutics, the enterprise secured substantial venture capital, including an £88 million Series B and a $120 million Series C round backed by Novo Holdings, Eventide Asset Management, and Wellington Management. In February 2024, the business was fully acquired and delisted from the Nasdaq exchange by its founding investor, Syncona Ltd., which committed an additional $50 million to expand the clinical pipeline. Freeline was originally founded in 2015 as a biotechnology spinout from University College London by Professor Amit Nathwani.
