Free State of Saxony

The Free State of Saxony is a German federal state headquartered in Dresden that governs public administration, infrastructure, education, and regional development for 4.1 million residents. The region's historical and political development has been shaped by prominent figures and entities, including the House of Wettin, King Friedrich August III, and former Prime Minister Professor Doctor Georg Milbradt. Operating as a public government entity funded by federal and state taxes, this southeastern jurisdiction shares borders with Poland and the Czech Republic while managing cultural heritage sites like Stolpen Castle. Tracing its medieval origins to around the year 700 as a duchy, the modern state was established in 1918 following the monarchy's abdication and retained its designation in the 1920 constitution.
