Developer of subsea desalination systems using ocean pressure to produce low-carbon drinking water without brine discharge for coastal areas.
Founded in 2024 by Alexander Fuglesang as an FSubsea spin-out, Oslo-based Flocean develops subsea desalination systems utilizing natural ocean pressure at 400 to 600 meters depth to produce low-carbon drinking water without coastal infrastructure. The company utilizes a build-own-operate model, selling water as a service to municipal and industrial clients through long-term offtake agreements spanning 15 to 25 years. To commercialize its modular technology, Flocean raised $22.5 million in extended Series A funding backed by prominent investors including Xylem Inc., Burnt Island Ventures, Nysnø Climate Investments, and Katapult Ocean. Recently named a TIME Best Invention of 2025, the organization is preparing to deploy Flocean One, its inaugural commercial demonstrator plant at Mongstad, Norway. Operations for this pioneering subsea facility are officially scheduled to commence and deliver first water during the first half of 2026.
