Founded in 1947, ETS emerged from the merger of three non-profit educational entities: the American Council on Education, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and The College Entrance Examination Board. This consolidation met the post-World War II need for centralized, standardized testing for returning veterans. Henry Chauncey, its first president, guided its early focus.
