Founded in 2003 by Joshua Schachter and Peter Gadjokov, Delicious was a pioneering social bookmarking website that allowed users to store, tag, share, and discover web bookmarks online. The platform enabled centralized access to saved links across multiple devices and emphasized user-generated, non-hierarchical tagging, making it highly popular among early Web 2.0 adopters and online fandom communities. By the end of 2008, the service reached its peak operational scale, supporting over five million three hundred thousand registered users and hosting approximately 180 million unique bookmarked URLs. Throughout its corporate lifecycle, the enterprise was acquired by several recognizable technology organizations, including Yahoo, AVOS Systems, Science Incorporated, and Delicious Media. The business experienced a final ownership transition when it was sold to competitor Pinboard, founded by Maciej Cegłowski, for a valuation of $35,000 in 2017, leading to its permanent shutdown.
