The Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) delivers and scales advanced artificial intelligence capabilities across the Department of Defense. It integrates and fields AI applications, building shared infrastructure like the Joint Common Foundation (JCF) for robust, ethical AI deployment. JAIC provides cross-cutting AI solutions and technical guidance, enhancing defense operations.

Established in 2018 under the Department of Defense's Chief Information Officer, JAIC originated from the strategic insight that centralized coordination was essential to harness AI’s transformative power for national security. Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan directed its formation, unifying fragmented AI efforts, ensuring rapid adoption across the military.

JAIC’s primary beneficiaries are warfighters and U.S. Department of Defense components, utilizing its AI tools and platforms for operational effectiveness and strategic advantage. The organization’s overarching vision is to secure technological superiority in AI by leading the ethical implementation of military-grade artificial intelligence, bolstering defense readiness and safeguarding national interests.
