Based in Dübendorf, Switzerland, BTRY develops ultra-thin, energy-dense solid-state batteries using semiconductor manufacturing techniques to enable one-minute charging and non-flammable operation up to 150 degrees Celsius. The solvent-free technology facilitates miniaturization for devices where conventional lithium-ion batteries fail, initially targeting internet of things applications like wireless sensors and connected labels. Future expansion plans involve transitioning to industrial roll-to-roll manufacturing to supply the wearables, compact consumer electronics, medical technology, robotics, and aerospace sectors. Operating with fifteen employees, the startup recently secured a $5.7 million oversubscribed seed funding round led by Redstone VC, alongside Bloomhaus Ventures, Linear Capital, HTGF, Zürcher Kantonalbank, Kickfund, and CustomCells founders Leopold König and Torge Thönnessen. Targeting billion-dollar battery markets, the company was founded in 2023 as a spin-off from Empa and ETH Zürich by Moritz Futscher, Abdessalem Aribia, and Yaroslav Romanyuk.
