Medical device developer of the ConvertX stent system for interventional radiology, focused on ureteral and bile duct obstructions.
Founded by Doctor Robert Smouse, an interventional radiologist at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, BrightWater Medical is a medical device developer based in Temecula, California. The company created the ConvertX stent system to treat severe ureteral blockages, urinary tract obstructions, and bile duct issues in a single procedure. This technology allows physicians to convert a nephroureteral catheter into a stent without requiring patient sedation, effectively replacing multiple traditional surgical steps for patients. Following its first successful patient use at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in 2017, the device secured FDA clearance for its biliary stent system. After initially raising $5,200,000 in Series A financing led by OSF Ventures, BrightWater Medical was acquired by Merit Medical in June 2019 for a $35 million upfront payment and up to $15 million in potential future earn-outs.
