Paris-based Aldebaran Robotics designed, manufactured, and sold autonomous humanoid robots utilized across academic research, STEM education, healthcare facilities, and commercial hospitality sectors. Operating primarily as a hardware and proprietary software licensing business, the company historically employed over 400 people at its peak and shipped more than 27,000 units of its flagship Nao robot globally. Following a 2015 acquisition by Masayoshi Son and his multinational conglomerate SoftBank Group, the firm rebranded and shifted its operational focus toward broader commercialization efforts with the launch of its customer-facing Pepper model. The enterprise was subsequently acquired by the German holding company United Robotics Group in 2022, which restored the original brand name, before the business ultimately entered liquidation proceedings in early 2025 to auction its remaining intellectual property. Aldebaran Robotics was originally founded in 2005 by French entrepreneur Bruno Maisonnier.
