Agricultural robotics for automated apple-picking. Uses computer vision and machine learning to harvest fruit in commercial orchards.
Hayward, California-based Abundant Robotics develops automated agricultural harvesting equipment, utilizing computer vision and a specialized vacuum system to identify and gently extract ripe apples from commercial orchards. The agricultural technology company initially raised approximately $12 million in venture capital funding across its seed and Series A rounds before ceasing operations in June 2021 due to pandemic-related financial constraints. During its initial operational period, the firm secured financial backing from prominent corporate investors including GV, Yamaha Motor Ventures, and the German conglomerate BayWa. Following the shutdown, venture studio Wavemaker Labs acquired the company's intellectual property and relaunched the enterprise as Abundant Robots in late 2022 alongside a $20 million equity crowdfunding campaign. The original enterprise was founded in 2016 as a robotics spin-out from SRI International by Curt Salisbury, Dan Steere, and Michael Eriksen.
